Her research interests include bilingual young children with disabilities, parent engagement in early intervention, and teacher preparation in early childhood special education.

    Amanda Quesenberry, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at Illinois State University in the School of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Quesenberry has 20 years of experience working in the field of early childhood special education. Dr. Quesenberry received her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007. Her research interests include young children’s social and emotional development, educators’ professional development, and early childhood policy.
  • Sharon Doubet, PhD (Author) Illinois State University
    Sharon Doubet, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at Illinois State University in the Department of Special Education. With over 40 years in the field of early childhood, Dr. Doubet has enjoyed experiences in a variety of settings. Her research is focused on the social and emotional development of young children, parent engagement, and leadership roles in early childhood. Dr. Doubet received her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008.

In this paper, we will discuss the historical impact of communism on services for children with disabilities in Romania and the efforts made to support young children with disabilities and their families in the post-communist era. The results of the qualitative study focus on attitudes and beliefs of current special education teachers in Romania, and linkages with DEC Recommended practices when envisioning a brighter future for young children with disabilities in Romania.
