Child Find Activities Between Public School Personnel: Engagement, Barriers, and Experiences

    Julie M. Lane, Ed.D. Julie completed her doctoral work at Pepperdine University. She is an associate professor at Fresno Pacific University and currently serves as the Educational Leadership Division Chair and the School of Education’s Master of Arts Coordinator. She has been in the special education field for more than 25 years. Prior to her higher education position, she served in public, private, and charter schools as a special education teacher, program specialist, and special education director. Her experiences with the child find process from each of those settings spurred her interest to learn more about how public and private school educators view child find.

    David R. Jones, M.A. David is a doctoral student at Fielding University and an adjunct faculty member at Fresno Pacific University. David accomplished his entire precollegiate experience at a Christian school alongside individuals who needed or barely received special education services. That experience incited his interest in researching issues of special education at private schools. He hopes to generate more support for the individuals and their families who need special education programs at private schools. His later education involved developmental psychology, counseling, educational leadership and human development. He teaches child and adolescent development to aspiring educators, as well as writing to graduate students. He also investigates barriers to student success for the School of Education at Fresno Pacific University.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, local education agencies or school districts are responsible to conduct child find activities within their agency or district boundaries. This responsibility entails collaborating with private school personnel on an annual basis. Through this qualitative study with a grounded theory approach, we explored the nature of interactions between public and private school personnel as they pertained to child find activities. This inquiry represents the first exploration of relationships between private and public schools within the context of child find activities.
